About Emily Moran Barwick
Emily is a neurodivergent1 artist, writer, activist, educator, international speaker, and complex human being highly averse to brief bios (yet here we are).
For some origin-story flavor: Born with a fierce sense of justice, Emily took to activism at an early age, read voraciously, made art indiscriminately, and wrote poetry and prose like her life depended on it (which, she argues, it did).
For some (borderline pompous) academic overtones: Emily attended Brown University, graduated from Cornell College with honors,2 conducted independent research in India on adverse sex ratio, and received her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Iowa.
For some hints of semi-professionalism: Emily founded and single-handedly runs an educational nonprofit. She has delivered speeches around the United States and internationally—including Canada, the UK, Portugal, and Ireland. Her art, advocacy, and writing have received national news coverage, and her educational videos have been used in University classrooms around the world. Her writing has been published in "actual-hold-in-your-hand-physical book form" in two anthologies, and (if you want to get technical about it), her two Master's theses (though she doubts those count).
For some "where are they now" recency: In addition to her nonprofit, and working one-on-one with other neurodivergent activists, Emily is currently focusing her artistic and writing practices within the container of fromemily.com. She is interested in challenging the bounds of a single website as medium—exploring how much of the complexity of human experience can be breathed into HTML.
For some humanizing hobby & home talk: Emily very much likes to climb things and can be found skittering up Iowa limestone rock faces (rope in tow) on a semi-regular basis. She remains a voracious reader. Her apartment is composed of approximately 68% books, 27% vintage technology (like her beloved 1984 black and white Sampo TV connected to a VCR and Firestick; a record-player/8-track player combo; an Atari TouchMe; and more delightful devices that make her gleeful), 2% plants, and 3% normal apartment stuff.
For some self-conscious undercutting of the semi-professionalism: As previously stated, Emily is averse to (and quite rubbish at) elevator-pitching herself. This page is her (current) best attempt.3 It didn't go great...and she missed her floor entirely...
